BigBasket’s Story

BB’s story is an inspiring one. In 1999, founders Hari Menon, Abhinay Choudhari, V S Sudhakar, Vipul Parekh and V S Ramesh started Fabmart, an online electronics e-commerce website. As profitable as e-commerce websites are today, the internet had very low penetration at the time in India and the lack of secure digital payment gateways largely discouraged people from making online payments. As such, Fabmart failed to succeed. After their online grocery venture Fabmall got some traction, they eventually sold it to the Aditya Birla Group.

The 5 founders, however, didn’t have closure with this venture, They were always keen on implementing online grocery in the most efficient manner and in 2011, the same team regrouped for a second foray in the online grocery market and started the e-tailer BigBasket.
Firstly, we must realise there are major difficulties with reliably supplying groceries and FMCGs (Fast Moving Consumer Goods). FMCGs are products that are sold quickly, at relatively low cost and are highly perishable. The following are a few key issues in the FMCG industry:-
- The competition in the FMCG market is cut-throat
- Abundance of counterfeit goods
- Consumer health and safety issues (Classic eg-Maggi Noodles)
- Taxation varying from state to state making prices for same goods variable
- Unreliable and unpredictable rural agriculture market

These and other myriad reasons make e-commerce for food and groceries one of the toughest businesses from an execution standpoint.
The wealth of knowledge and experience between these 5 veterans of the supermarket industry made them come up with effective solutions to tackle all these problems - to combine the new age tech (without leaving too heavily on it) with the old-school approach of supplying groceries. BigBasket has broken the myth that e-commerce will not work for FMCGs. While the pressure of managing perishable inventory, gauging customer interests, assuring on-time delivery, and managing margins while at it, has stumped everyone from Flipkart, Paytm, and Ola, to a bunch of smaller startups, most of which either scaled back, closed operations, or simply shut shop, BigBasket have grown slowly and steadily, with negligible discounts and a strong business model. Today they boast over four million registered customers, 2.5 million transacting customers and sales of Rs 150 crore per month. They really took the bull by the horns and came out victorious.

What makes BB products more quality assured?

It’s their ideology of Farm to Fork. 20% of the value of Bigbasket comes from fresh fruits and vegetables, and in the CEO Hari Menon’s words, “The online farm to fork gives us the best experience because we source either from the mandis of the farmers which essentially come to our warehouse and get processed and goes directly to the customers. Fruits and vegetables play a very key role for us.
“We have also tied up with some of the agro-businesses who deal closely with farmers. We make sure that we get the best produce and keep on supporting farmers. ”

That is, with no middlemen involved, they now buy straight from the farmers themselves. This gives rise to a win-win-win situation. Less cost for BB, a reliable customer (hence income) for the farmers, and fresh products for the consumers straight from the farms at no additional expense. BigBasket are spearheading an Indian organic revolution.

Express Delivery Service & The BB Special

The company also offers multiple delivery options such as Full-Service Delivery and Express Delivery, where an order is delivered within 90 minutes.
Another factor that differentiates BigBasket from its competition is their BB special- a speciality marketplace, where customers can order local specialities in meats, bakery, sweets and savouries.
The company along with grocery is also present in segments of conveniently pre-cut fruits and vegetables, happy Chef "Heat and Eat" and "Ready to Cook" range of meals and meal kits. It also has a large range of in-house brands in bakery, cookies, jams, honey, fryums, idli, dosa batter etc.

Focus on Customer Satisfaction

Menon says the company's customer satisfaction can keep all competition, be it Amazon or old box retailers, at bay.
"The factor that distinguishes us from the other players in the industry and results in better customer satisfaction is our focus on customer facing metrics, " says Menon.
He claimed that BigBasket has a more than 99.5% record in on-time delivery and a more than 99% fill rate of the products ordered by customers.
Pretty impressive, huh?
All the more, considering the fact that grocery and food is one of the toughest products to deliver on time and in a pristine state.

Green Basket and Organic India

An offline grocery store requires fuel to distribute to individual stores.
Further fuel is required for a member of each family to make multiple trips to the store for shopping.
Furthermore, supermarkets consume a lot of energy for lighting, air-conditioning and powering their refrigerators and freezers.
Being green is part of the culture at BigBasket.
They bypass these environmentally hazardous energy expenditures by bringing products to you straight from the wholesaler to your doorstep which cuts down on a lot of carbon emissions generated by the traditional supply chain and also reduces the number of cars on our roads.
Moreover, they minimize the use of paper and plastic bags while delivering products, which are delivered in crates that are taken back and reused. Their fruit and vegetable trays are recyclable and they request customers to return them so that they can be reused.

In India, the demand for organic products is very high but there is a huge demand-supply gap. Hari Mennon mentioned that Bigbasket is getting limited supplies from the partners they are working with. Therefore, Bigbasket is planning to set up 70–80 collection centres specifically for organic fruits and vegetables.
“We are very keen to submit proposals to the government to set up testing labs especially in the organic space. What a customer looks for in organic is certification. Currently, certification processes are a huge struggle and we do not want to go to international agencies. We believe organic products have a long way to go and we would to like to invest in that,” says Hari.
BB are looking to invest significant efforts towards an organic revolution in India.
